SMS Review Requests: When Text Beats Email for Reviews
Most DTC brands ask for reviews by email and stop there. Text is a better fit for a narrow set of moments, and a worse fit for everything else. Knowing which is which is the whole decision.
When Text Wins
Text wins when the ask is short, the action takes one tap, and the timing is tight.
A review request that arrives two days after delivery, with the product name and a direct link to a one-tap star rating, can convert on a phone in a way it often does not in an inbox already holding dozens of other messages.
Text also works well for the second ask.
A subscriber who ignored the review email is unlikely to open another reminder email. The same person may still respond to a text because the channel change itself signals that the ask is small and immediate.
When Email Wins
Email wins whenever you want more than a star rating.
Photo and video reviews usually require a form, and a form needs a larger screen and a stronger moment of intent than a text interruption creates.
Bazaarvoice’s network data attributes a 150% increase in conversion rates to product pages carrying photo and video reviews, alongside a 250% increase in time on site and a 15% increase in average order value Bazaarvoice, product detail page conversion.
Those are the reviews worth working for, and email is usually the better vehicle for collecting them.
The email structure is covered in the review request email.
Email also wins when consent is the constraint, which is most of the time.
Your email list is usually larger than your SMS list, and a review request is not always the right message to spend hard-won SMS consent on if the same customer is likely to respond by email.
Time Both Channels From Delivery, Not Order
The single most common mistake is triggering the review request from the order date rather than the delivery confirmation.
A customer who has not received the product cannot review it, and asking too early makes the programme feel obviously automated.
Trigger the request from delivery, then wait long enough for the product to have been used.
For apparel and accessories, that may be two or three days. For consumables, skincare, or products where results take time to appear, the right delay may be one to two weeks.
The review request should also sit inside the broader post-purchase journey rather than being added as a separate automation with no coordination.
The sequence is covered in the post-purchase flow playbook.
What the Text Should Say
Keep it to one sentence, include the product name, use one link, identify the brand, and include the opt-out.
A simple structure is:
“Hi [name], how are you finding your [product]? One tap to rate it: [link]. Reply STOP to opt out.”
Do not offer points in the first message.
Offer them in the follow-up to non-responders instead, so you are not paying for reviews you would have received anyway.
When you do reward reviews, points are one of the cheapest currencies available. The economics are covered in what a loyalty point should be worth.
The Compliance Point People Miss
A review request sent by SMS is still a marketing message.
It falls under the same consent, quiet-hour, STOP, and HELP obligations as a promotional text.
That means it should only go to subscribers who explicitly opted in to marketing, not to everyone whose phone number you collected during checkout.
Using numbers collected for transactional purposes to send review requests is one of the most common compliance issues we find in audits.
The full checklist is covered in the SMS compliance checklist.
What Good Looks Like
Okendo’s merchant data puts typical review rates at roughly 2.5% to 5% of orders, while its top decile of merchants reaches 22% Okendo, reviews metrics.
That difference is not just a copywriting gap.
It comes down to timing, channel selection, and whether the brand sends a second ask when the first one is ignored.
We build review programmes across both channels as part of our review and UGC program services, with the SMS side running on the same consent architecture as the rest of our SMS marketing services.
