Web Push Notification Examples That Earn the Tap

Reading Time: 3 Minutes

Push is the only owned channel with no send cost, which is exactly why it gets abused.

These are the six message types that earn the tap for a DTC brand, what each should actually say, and the patterns that get a programme muted.

If you are still deciding whether push belongs in your stack at all, the case is covered in web push notifications for ecommerce. This post assumes that decision is already made.

One: Back in Stock

This is the highest-intent push you will ever send because the subscriber explicitly asked to be interrupted.

Name the product, not the category.

A strong message looks like:

“The Ribbed Crew in Bone is back. Sizes running low.”

Link directly to the product page rather than the collection page.

Pair the push with the email version so subscribers who miss one channel still receive the alert. The broader setup is covered in back-in-stock alerts.

Two: Cart Recovery

Send it within an hour, once, and never twice.

Push is more intrusive than email and less permissioned than SMS, so a second notification about the same cart quickly starts to feel like nagging.

A simple message works best:

“Still thinking about the Merino Hoodie? It’s in your cart.”

PushOwl’s older ecommerce benchmark data from 2022 put abandoned cart push click-through at 7.4% compared with an all-message average of 3.68% PushOwl web push benchmarks.

The benchmark is dated, but the underlying pattern still holds: cart recovery is one of the strongest use cases for the channel.

Three: Price Drop on a Viewed Product

This should be behaviourally triggered, low volume, and highly relevant.

It requires browse tracking, but the setup is worth it because the message reaches the exact intersection of demonstrated interest and a new reason to act.

The customer has already looked at the product. The price drop gives them a reason to come back.

That combination makes this one of the most valuable automated push triggers available.

Four: Drop and Launch

Push is one of the fastest ways to compress response into a short window, which makes it a natural fit for timed product releases.

Use one push when the drop goes live and one when genuine low-stock urgency appears.

Nothing else.

The broader sequence across channels is covered in the product drop launch playbook.

Five: Order and Delivery Updates

Transactional push is high utility and gives subscribers a reason to keep the channel enabled.

Shipping confirmations, delivery updates, and order-status changes prove that push is useful rather than purely promotional.

Brands that only send promotions train subscribers to dismiss every notification.

A useful transactional message can make the next promotional message more welcome.

Six: The Reactivation Nudge

Use this for a subscriber who has not visited in around sixty days.

Send one message with a genuine reason to return.

If it is ignored, stop.

Push subscribers do not always unsubscribe in the visible way email subscribers do. They can simply disable notifications at the device or browser level, and the brand may never know exactly when it happened.

The Patterns That Get a Programme Muted

Broadcasting everything.

Behaviour-triggered messages consistently outperform broad promotional sends because the reason for the message is clearer.

MoEngage’s 2026 benchmark data found broadcast push achieving an 80.73% delivery rate compared with 93.07% for behaviour-triggered sends. It also found that non-personalised messages can produce dramatically higher unsubscribe rates than journey-based ones MoEngage channel benchmarks, 27 March 2026.

The delivery gap alone is a strong argument for triggering instead of broadcasting.

Asking for permission on arrival.

Firing the browser permission prompt at second zero gives the visitor no reason to say yes.

If they block it, you may lose the opportunity permanently.

Give visitors enough time to understand the brand and provide a meaningful reason to opt in before asking for permission.

Sending at your hour instead of theirs.

Push lands directly on a lock screen or browser.

A promotional message arriving at midnight is not simply inconvenient. It is a reason to disable the channel.

Schedule by the subscriber’s local time.

Treating push as cheaper email.

Push is not cheaper email.

It is shorter, more interruptive, and far less forgiving of a weak reason to send.

Every push should answer a simple question: why does this customer need to know this now?

Where Push Sits Against the Other Channels

Emarsys benchmark data puts web push direct open rates around 5% to 12% and app push around 4% to 6%, compared with retail email open rates of 38.2% and SMS open rates of 90% to 98% Emarsys omnichannel engagement benchmarks, 13 March 2026.

Push is not a replacement for either channel.

It is the zero-send-cost layer that can catch customers email missed and reach moments that do not justify spending an SMS.

We build and run push alongside email and SMS as part of our web and app push notification services.
