Klaviyo vs Braze for Scaling DTC Brands

Klaviyo vs Braze for Scaling DTC Brands

Reading Time: 4 Minutes

Klaviyo is the better platform for a DTC brand whose revenue runs through a Shopify store and whose team wants published pricing and a free start. Braze is the better platform once a mobile app, a headless storefront or several markets and approval layers are in play, and the business is ready for a quoted, usage-based contract.

Is your growth coming from a Shopify store or a mobile app?

Klaviyo’s product page is a Shopify-first document. It describes “native integrations with ecommerce platforms like Shopify”, promises “Integrate with 350+ apps”, and positions the product as “the autonomous B2C CRM” for “205,000+ relationship-driven brands across 100 countries” (Klaviyo product page, 4 October 2026). There is even a “Klaviyo Starter in Shopify” edition: free, 250 profiles, 500 emails a month, three automated messages live at once and one live sign-up form, with Powered by Klaviyo branding (Klaviyo help centre, updated 21 September 2026). The entire on-ramp assumes a Shopify merchant.

Braze’s product page is channel-first. Its line is “Braze. Be Absolutely Engaging.”, and the product pillars are Data Activation with “170+ partner integrations”, Journey Orchestration and BrazeAI (Braze product page, 4 October 2026). Channels named are email, SMS, push notifications, WhatsApp “and more”. Its industry list names eight sectors, with Retail and eCommerce one of them, not the centre.

Braze does integrate with Shopify. A press release from 18 March 2025 announced a “new strategic partnership and integration with Shopify”, and the Braze docs describe a standard path and a custom, headless path (Braze docs, 4 October 2026). The docs do not use the word “native”. If your storefront is a standard Shopify theme, Klaviyo’s integration is the deeper default. If you have built headless, or your app is where repeat purchases happen, Braze’s custom path is the reason it is on the shortlist.

Where Braze wins outright is the app: push and WhatsApp are named channels, and a DTC brand with a real app inherits that.

Do you want to pay for stored profiles or for active users?

Klaviyo bills per active profile. The help centre defines it plainly: “Any profile, regardless of consent status, that can be emailed through Klaviyo is considered an active profile”, and your monthly tier is set by the billable profile count at the time of billing (Klaviyo help centre, 25 March 2026). Pricing “starts at $60 per month based on active profiles”, with a free tier under 250 profiles and 500 sends (Klaviyo product page, 4 October 2026). Profile growth moves you to the next tier at the next billing cycle, and email usage can auto-upgrade you. The tier table itself is rendered in a widget we could not retrieve, so the per-band prices are not stated here; check them in-product. SMS is a separate Mobile Messaging subscription, and since 13 July 2026 it is billed per message in dollars, carrier fees bundled, rather than in credits.

Braze bills on Monthly Active Users. Its pricing page says “Scale your investment with real user engagement” and that cost scales with MAU, layered with “Action Credits”, described as “a flexible credit-based model that works across every channel” (Braze pricing page, 4 October 2026). There are four editions: Braze Go for “early-stage growth teams”, Braze Select for companies “scaling their engagement across more channels and team members while strengthening their governance and security”, Braze Pro for “advanced BrazeAI capabilities and personalization”, and Braze Enterprise. No dollar figures appear anywhere on the page. There is a 14-day free trial with no credit card required (Braze free trial page, 4 October 2026); its limits are not published, and there is no free plan.

The consequence for a DTC brand: on Klaviyo, a large file of lapsed but emailable profiles costs money every month whether or not you send to them, so suppression and sunset discipline is a cost control. On Braze, the MAU model ties cost to engaged users, which suits a brand with a large dormant file and an active app audience. Which one is cheaper depends on the shape of your list, and only Klaviyo lets you estimate it before a sales call.

How many teams, markets and approvals touch a single send?

The Braze Select description is the tell: “scaling their engagement across more channels and team members while strengthening their governance and security” (Braze pricing page, 4 October 2026). Governance is a word that appears when a platform expects legal, regional and brand teams to share one account. If one marketer builds and sends your flows, that is overhead. If five markets and two legal reviewers touch a campaign, it is the point.

Klaviyo’s page does not sell on governance. It sells on speed: “Email marketing that delivers wins”, “One platform for every customer journey”, “Let AI do the optimizing for you” (Klaviyo product page, 4 October 2026). It is the platform for a team that wants flows live this week and a Shopify data feed that already works.

Neither vendor publishes a comparison page against the other, which suggests they are rarely in the same deal. When they are, the brand is usually at an inflection: an app launching, a second region opening, or procurement that needs a contract rather than a credit card.

Before choosing Braze, check the real cost at your MAU, which only a quote will tell you; whether you need the standard or the custom Shopify path; and whether the 14-day trial can be scoped to prove the integration. Before staying on Klaviyo, check your active profile count against your engaged count, the SMS rate for your main country in-product, and whether the 350+ apps include the systems that will matter once the app ships.

In our retention email programmes, [BMO NUMBER: insert the Klaviyo flow-attributed revenue share you measured across accounts, with account count and window] is the benchmark a scaling brand should hold its current platform to before paying for the next one.
