Should You Hire Freelance Marketer or Choose an Agency?

Reading Time: 2 Minutes

A typical founder running a $3 million business has around $10,000 a month set aside for marketing. The last agency charged a monthly retainer, delivered plenty of updates, but left the founder wondering what the money actually achieved.

Now there’s a decision to make. Should you hire freelance marketer support for specific tasks or sign with another agency?

The cheapest option isn’t always the right one. Neither is the bigger team.

What matters is the work you need done and how much management you can realistically provide.

1. How Much Work Actually Needs Doing?

Start with a list of tasks, not a list of service providers.

If you need someone to manage one advertising channel, write email campaigns, or improve your website’s search visibility, a specialist freelancer could be enough.

But if your business needs paid advertising, content, design, and reporting at the same time, an agency may be easier to coordinate.

The decision rule: One clearly defined job usually favors a freelancer. Several connected jobs may justify an agency.

2. Who Will Manage the Work?

Freelancers often need clear briefs, regular feedback, and someone to coordinate their work with other marketing activities.

Agencies generally provide more internal coordination, but that doesn’t mean you can stop paying attention.

Before hiring, ask:

  • Who will assign priorities each week?
  • Who will review completed work?
  • Who will check results against spending?
  • Who will handle problems when deadlines slip?

If nobody owns these responsibilities, even a capable marketing partner can struggle.

3. What Are You Actually Paying For?

At a $10,000 monthly marketing budget, every service fee matters.

A freelance marketing specialist may offer a lower monthly commitment for a narrow scope. An agency retainer might cover several skills, project coordination, and ongoing support.

But compare the full cost, not just the quoted fee.

Ask what’s included, what costs extra, who will do the work, and how much budget remains for campaigns.

A smaller quote isn’t necessarily better if you end up paying three other people to complete the job.

4. Can You Start Smaller?

Before committing to a long contract, consider a defined initial project with measurable deliverables.

If you hire freelance marketer support, start with one responsibility and a clear review date.

If you choose an agency, agree on the scope, reporting expectations, and exit terms before signing.

Either way, avoid paying for services your business doesn’t currently need.

What If You’re Still Unsure?

Choosing between freelancers and agencies is difficult when you don’t know which skills you need or what fair pricing looks like.

Connectwright helps founders make that decision independently. It identifies the marketing support required, selects an appropriately priced agency or freelancer, and stays involved to oversee the partner’s work. It doesn’t handle the execution itself, and its partners pay for the arrangement rather than the founder.

The goal isn’t to hire the biggest team or the cheapest person. It’s to match the right level of support to the actual work.
