Social media users have been changing their profile picture to blue, for the sake of Sudan. There has been a brutal crackdown in the capital, that has killed dozens of people in Khartoum. The blue wave has spread its wings everywhere – #BlueforSudan is being used as a hashtag on Twitter and Instagram.

This is to honour a victim’s favourite colour, which is blue. The victim has been identified as Mohammed Mattar. This 26-year-old engineer was gunned down on June 3 crackdown, that has been blamed by the protesters on Rapid Support Forced (RSF) which is run by Sudan’s ruling transitional military council.

Mattar was shot while he was trying to protect two women. Once murdered, his friends and family turned their social media photos to match his – a shade of blue. And eventually all people followed the same – this represents Sudan’s people and their pain.

The protests were against Sudan’s ruler Omar al-Bashir. He was removed on April 11th, but protesters remained at the site, calling for civilian rule. People have become unified by this colour, and are in solidarity with the cause.
