Content that gets cited, and content that gets ignored
AI assistants do not cite pages. They cite passages. An assistant builds an answer by pulling one block of text that stands on its own, attributing that block, then discarding the rest of the page it came from. That single mechanic explains most of the distance between content that gets quoted and content that never does.
What actually gets taken from your page
Retrieval systems work in chunks, usually a few hundred words each. Those chunks get scored against the question before any answer text is written. Your page is not the unit of selection. The chunk is.
So a carefully built essay that works slowly toward its point is good writing and poor source material. The paragraph carrying your best insight sits on top of four paragraphs of setup, and lifted away from that setup it reads as half a thought. Someone who answers the question outright in one paragraph takes the chunk, even with a weaker argument behind it.
You can write well and still be quotable. It takes deciding, section by section, that each block has to survive being pulled out.
The four properties of a block that gets quoted
First, a direct answer inside the opening 60 words, phrased in the words a person would actually type. Second, at least one number you produced yourself with the method attached in the same sentence, because a figure with no visible origin is a figure no assistant will repeat. Third, named sources for anything you did not measure, with the organization and the year written into the sentence rather than hidden behind a hyperlink. Fourth, self-containment, meaning the block still makes sense pasted somewhere else with no heading above it.
Miss one and nothing dramatic happens. You just lose the chunk to something easier to lift.
What twenty posts with no citations look like
We audited a library of 20 published posts this year. Across all 20 there were zero external citations. Not few. Zero. The average was 1.3 statistics per post, and most of those were recycled industry figures with no source attached to them. Thirteen of the 20 carried no first-hand experience marker at all: no audit, no version of “we tried this and here is what came back.”
Every post was competently written. That was the problem. Competent and sourceless is the exact profile of content an assistant understands perfectly and has no reason to name.
Ranking still decides whether you enter the candidate set
We work with an infrastructure company in the private-LLM space carrying a domain authority of 17. Of 160 tracked keywords, 158 sat somewhere on pages 2 through 10. Zero top-three positions. Across two Google core updates their organic traffic fell roughly 70 percent, from about 1,200 visits a month down to 367.
Their writing was not thin. It was invisible at the retrieval stage, because assistants lean heavily on documents that already rank or are already cited elsewhere. Quotable blocks on a page nothing retrieves change nothing. These are two separate problems and you have to work on both.
Why someone else’s page often beats yours as a source
For a commercial question, an assistant tends to prefer a source that reads as independent. Your own page is a reasonable source for what your product does. It is a weak source for who does this best. A single sentence about you inside a well-cited roundup can therefore produce more assistant mentions than a year of posting on your own domain. At Growthym we treat the third-party mention and the on-site block as one program rather than two, because the citation usually arrives through a page you do not own.
Go after the pages already cited for your category questions. Then make sure the sentence about you inside them is quotable on its own, because that sentence is what travels.
Where to start this week
Take your five highest-intent pages. Rewrite the first 60 words of each into a standalone answer, add one number you measured yourself, and cite one named external source with its year in the sentence. Then check whether those five pages rank anywhere in the top 20, because if they do not, the rewrite buys you very little until the ranking problem gets handled. If you want the ranking side and the citation side checked in one pass, that is what the audit at https://growthym.com/audit/ covers.
