Digital PR for AI citations, not for domain authority

Digital PR for AI citations, not for domain authority

Reading Time: 3 Minutes

A mention on a page that AI assistants already cite is worth more than a dofollow link from a site nobody quotes. Digital PR used to be a link channel graded on domain authority. It is now a placement channel graded on whether your name appears inside the documents an assistant reads before answering.

The scorecard changed and most programs did not

The old target was a link on a domain above some authority threshold. That target still has value for ranking, but it undercounts badly. A nofollow mention on a roundup that assistants pull from every day can produce more qualified visits than a dofollow link from a site with strong metrics and no readers.

The reason is mechanical. Assistants retrieve documents, extract passages, then name the source. Whether the mention carries a followed link is irrelevant to that process. What matters is whether your name sits in a passage that gets extracted.

Find the pages already cited for your category

Start with the questions your buyers ask in plain language, not your keyword list. Run them through the assistants your buyers use. Write down every source named in the answers, then run the same query a second time from a different account, because the source set shifts and you want the pages that appear consistently.

That list is your target list. It will look nothing like the list a traditional outreach tool produces, and it is usually shorter, which is helpful.

Roundups are the dominant format now

We checked page one for two US queries in September 2026. For “ai seo agency” the ten results carried domain authority between 23 and 33. For “generative engine optimization agency” the range ran 30 to 47, and six of the ten results were roundup listicles rather than agency sites.

Six of ten. The page ranking for a service query is mostly not the service provider. It is someone’s list of service providers, and that list is what the assistant reads when a buyer asks who is good at this. If you are not in those lists, you are absent from the answer no matter how good your own page is.

Getting into a roundup without sounding like a pitch

Roundup authors need two things: a reason to update the piece, and material they do not have to write themselves. Give them both. Send a specific finding with a number. Offer a two-sentence description of what you do that fits their existing format, and say plainly which position in the list you think you fit and why.

Do not ask for a link. Ask to be considered for the next update, and tell them when your data refreshes so they have a reason to come back. Outreach built this way is what Growthym runs for clients, and the reply rate is higher than cold link requests by a wide margin because the ask is smaller.

Source-request platforms matter again

Journalist request services fell out of favor when the links got devalued. They are worth revisiting, for a different reason. A quote in a published article puts your name inside a document that gets indexed and retrieved. The link may be nofollow. The citation is not.

Answer fast, answer with a number, and answer in a form the writer can paste without editing. Two or three usable quotes a month will do more for assistant visibility than a quarter of guest posting.

The 404 that made this concrete for us

While auditing our own site we found ChatGPT sending clicks to a Growthym URL that returned a 404. An assistant was citing a page that no longer existed, and had been doing so long enough to send measurable traffic.

That was a useful embarrassment. It proved assistants were reading us, and it proved we had no system watching what they read. Fixing the 404 recovered the citation. Nothing about our link profile changed. If you want to see which pages assistants currently associate with your brand, that check is part of https://growthym.com/services/ai-search-visibility/.

This week, pick the ten questions your buyers actually ask, run each one through two assistants, and build a target list from the sources that appear in both. Then pitch the four that already rank for your category query. That list is worth more than any media database you could buy.
