What US buyers should ask an India-based growth partner

Reading Time: 3 Minutes

Ask about overlap hours before you ask about price. A team in Noida covers roughly four to five hours of a US Eastern workday without anybody working through the night, and two to three hours of Pacific. That number shapes the next twelve months of the relationship more than the rate card does.

How many hours overlap, and who is actually on the call

Get the answer in hours, not reassurances about flexibility. Ask what the team’s normal working day looks like in India Standard Time, then do the arithmetic. Noida runs 9.5 hours ahead of US Eastern for most of the year, which puts a 9 am to 6 pm Indian day against roughly 11:30 pm to 8:30 am Eastern.

So real overlap comes from a shifted team, not a standard one. Ask who shifts, how many days a week, and whether the person on your calls is shifted or joining at 10 pm as a favor that quietly stops in month four.

Who does the work, and who sold it

This question separates good offshore partners from bad ones, and it has nothing to do with geography. Ask for the names of the people who will touch your account and how many other accounts each one carries. Then ask whether the person in the sales call appears on that list.

A senior strategist selling and a junior executing is the oldest failure in agency work. It happens in New York too. Distance just makes it harder to notice for a few months.

How reporting arrives, and how often

Weekly written updates beat monthly calls. A call at somebody’s midnight gets rescheduled. A written update does not. Ask for a fixed day, a fixed format, and a named person who writes it.

The format matters more than the frequency. You want what was done, what changed in the numbers, what did not work, and what is planned next. If the first report is a dashboard screenshot with no words around it, say so in week one rather than month three. At Growthym the written weekly is the default rather than an upgrade, and you can read the working cadence at https://growthym.com/how-we-work/ before any call.

What happens in a month that misses

Every engagement has a bad month. Ask what the partner does in one, and listen for whether they have a process or an apology.

Here is our version of that answer. In September 2026 we ran our own audit process on our own site. It found 145 URLs, 42 service pages across three overlapping page systems, 31 title tags over 60 characters, and three URLs returning 404. Mobile Time to Interactive measured 12 seconds, caused by a developer CSS tool left in production. Domain authority 14. Fifty-nine organic visits a month. We published it because a partner who cannot describe their own bad numbers will not describe yours either.

The contract paragraphs worth reading

Three areas, and none of them are boilerplate. IP ownership: everything produced should be yours on payment, including drafts, and the clause should say so without a license carve-out. Data handling: ask where client data is stored, who has access, and whether the partner will sign a DPA and support your GDPR or CCPA obligations. Notice period: 30 days is normal, 90 days is a lock-in, and anything with an auto-renew plus a short cancellation window deserves a red pen.

Also settle who holds platform access. Accounts should be created under your ownership with the partner added as a user, never the reverse.

Where offshore genuinely helps, and where it does not

It helps where the work is systematic and volume-sensitive: technical audits, content production at scale, paid media management, data work, reporting infrastructure. You get more senior attention per dollar and a team that runs production overnight and hands back finished work by your morning.

It helps less where the work depends on local cultural fluency or on relationships in your market. Editorial outreach to US trade press, or anything needing a native read on tone in a regulated category, wants someone in market or a partner honest enough to say so.

Send your shortlist one email asking for overlap hours, the names of the people who will do the work, the notice period, and a sample weekly report. The ones who answer all four within two business days are the ones worth a call.
