Homepage or landing page: where paid traffic should land

Reading Time: 3 Minutes

Send paid traffic to a landing page when the ad made a specific promise, and to the homepage only when the ad was about the brand rather than a product. The homepage is built to serve every visitor, which means it is optimised for none of the ones you just paid for.

Why the homepage usually loses

It has a different job. A homepage orients people who arrived without context: navigation, category entry points, brand story, several competing calls to action.

A paid visitor has context. They saw a specific claim thirty seconds ago and arrived expecting it continued. Landing on a page offering six directions makes them do work they did not agree to, and the most common response to work is leaving.

Message match is the largest single effect available on most paid funnels and the least often tested. The homepage cannot match a specific message because it was written to match all of them.

The three cases where the homepage is right

Brand campaigns. If the ad was about who you are rather than what you sell, the homepage is the correct continuation.

Branded search. Someone searching your name wants your site, not a funnel. Sending them to a landing page with no navigation is the mirror-image error.

Single-product brands. If you sell one thing, the homepage is already the landing page. Building a second page that says the same thing adds maintenance with no gain.

Outside those three, a dedicated page almost always wins, and the gap is usually large enough to see without a long test.

The failure that looks like a homepage problem

Sometimes the homepage is not the issue. The traffic is.

Before rebuilding anything, split conversion by source on the same page. If paid converts far below organic on identical content, the problem is traffic quality or message match rather than the page, and building a landing page will reproduce it at a new URL.

Most advertisers can quote a blended conversion rate and cannot produce this split. It takes an afternoon in analytics and it changes what you do next more than any test would.

What the dedicated page has to get right

The promise, restated in the first line, in the ad’s language rather than your brand language.

A short form if there is one. Analysis of Unbounce’s 2026 benchmark data shows three-field forms converting at 10.1% against 3.6% for nine-field forms.

Speed, because on paid traffic you pay twice for a slow page: it can cost 22% more per click than a faster competitor bidding on the same keyword, and roughly 70% of audited landing pages fail Core Web Vitals.

One call to action. A page with six has none.

What the switch is worth

At a supplements brand we work with, paid landing page conversion improved by 40% with no change in media spend. The same campaigns and audiences simply arrived somewhere built for them.

On a paid-heavy funnel that is a media efficiency result rather than a conversion result. A 40% improvement has the same revenue effect as a 40% budget increase, except it does not recur as a cost and it applies to every future campaign pointed at that page.

How to test it fairly

Run the homepage and the landing page against the same campaign, same budget, same audience, at the same time. Not sequentially, because week-to-week variation will swamp the difference.

Judge at four weeks, not four days. A new page underperforms early while the campaign feeding it is still learning, and calling it at day three measures the algorithm rather than the page.

Read it on revenue per session rather than conversion rate, since the two pages will often attract different basket behaviour.

Where each type of traffic should land, and the reporting split that decides it, is set out under landing page optimization agency.
